줄거리 : 때는 1920년, 일제 식민치하. 가난하지만 몰락한 양반임을 자부하는 집안의 맏딸 복녀는 자신의 의지와 상관없이 양반의 자손을 지아비로 맞는다. 입에 풀칠이라도 하기 위해서는 날품팔이라도 매일 해야하는 형편이건만 남편은 무능하고, 무기력하지만 허세만 가득하다. 할 수 없이 복녀는 생계벌이에 나서지만, 여의치 않다.
동네사람들에게 빚을 지고 사는 것도 하루 이틀, 복녀는 있지도 않은 간난쟁이를 업은 거지분장을 해가며 구걸까지 하게 된다.
그러던 어느날, 총독부에서 송충이잡이 작업을 할 아낙들을 모집한다는 소식이 들린다. 사업의 감독관은 일 잘할 것 같은 기준과는 무관한 자신만의 취향으로 일하는 아낙들을 뽑는데……

SYNOPSIS : Bok-nyeo gets married to a poor Joseon's aristrocart and lives a hard life to survive. She pays her family's living by catching caterpillars in a forest reserve. But she loses her job in the reserve and her husband disappears after borrowing money from a Chinese. In order to repay the husband's debt to the Chinese, she works in his vegetable farm. Later her husband comes back and suspects Bok-nyeo and the Chinese might have had an affair. He tries to kill him only to be killed.
