줄거리 : 남사당의 딸인 순이는 어머니의 버림을 받고 돌이와 그 어머니 한씨의 손에 키워져 돌이와 결혼하게 되나, 돌이 친구인 칠성이 순이를 짝사랑하게 된다. 돌이는 장터의 씨름대회에서 우승을 하여 그 값으로 순이의 옥가락지를 사다준다. 그러나 불행의 시작은 산림 김주사로 인해 시작된다. 김주사는 숯을 구워 파는 돌이를 산림법위반으로 잡아 가두고 순이를 겁탈하려고 한다. 때마침 찾아온 칠성의 도움으로 위기를 모면한 채 칠성을 따라 나선 순이는 도중 돌이의 생각으로 숯막에 돌아와 돌이를 기다리며 생활한다. 다시 찾아온 김주사가 순이의 몸을 요구하자 순이는 행복을 빼앗아간 김주사를 끌어안고 타오르는 숯막의 불길 속에서 같이 타죽는다. 석방되어 돌아온 돌이는 숯막의 타버린 잿더미 속에서 순이의 옥가락지를 찾아낸다.

SYNOPSIS : Sooni is the daughter of a strolling male entertainer. After her mother left her, Sooni was raised by Dori's mother and is engaged to Dori. But Dori's friend Chil-sung also has crush on her. One day, Dori wins the wrestling game at the marketplace and earns money as reward. With that money, he buys Sooni a jade ring. However, an air of misfortune begins as Mr. Kim, who is a forest keeper, locks up Dori who makes a living by making and selling charcoal in violation of forest regulation and tries to rape Sooni. Fortunately, Chil-sung, who came to look after Sooni, witnesses the scene and Sooni runs away with Chil-sung. But on her way, she is reminded of Dori and returns to the shed and waits for him. Mr. Kim returns and tries to rape her again. Sooni holds on to Mr. Kim who took away her happiness when the fire breaks out in the shed and the two burn to death together. Dori finally returns from the jail and finds Sooni's jade ring in the ashes.
