줄거리 : 광산 합리화로 폐광 위기에 처한 탄광촌에 민주화운동을 하다가 시위 주동 혐의로 수배 중인 대학생 태훈(문성군)이 김기영이라는 가명으로 숨어든다. 현재의 지식인 중심의 운동 방식에 회의를 느끼던 그는 연탄공장 잡역부로 취직해 탄광촌의 다양한 인간상을 만나게 된다. 지역 유지인 연탄공장 사장(박규채)의 외아들 성철(박중훈)은 아버지가 친어머니를 버리고 재혼한 것에 불만을 품고 지역의 다방 여성들과 공장 직원들에게 화풀이를 하며 폭군처럼 지내고 있다. 한편 다방에서 몸을 팔아 살아가던 영숙(심혜진)은 자신을 인간 취급도 하지 않으며 폭력적으로 대하는 성철에게 질려가던 중 태훈을 만나게 된다. 영숙은 과묵하면서도 자신을 따뜻하게 대하는 태훈에게 호감을 느끼고 티켓 파는 일을 그만둔다. 생모의 죽음을 전해 들은 성철은 다방에서 행패를 부리고, 영숙이 티켓 팔기를 거부하자 무차별적인 폭행을 가한다. 이를 말리던 태훈이 싸움에 휘말리고, 그를 주목하던 형사에게 잡혀가 고문을 당하지만 무혐의로 풀려난다. 영숙은 지극정성으로 태훈을 간호하고, 깨어난 태훈은 자신이 수배자임을 밝힌다. 영숙은 신분이 발각되어 떠나야 하는 태훈과 함께 탄광촌을 떠나기로 하고 짐을 가지러 다방으로 향한다. 그녀를 붙잡아두려는 성철을 죽인 영숙은 역에서 자신을 기다리는 태훈을 뒤로하고 경찰에 끌려간다.

SYNOPSIS : Gi-young a student activist wanted by the government for leading demonstrations hides out in a "soon-to-be-abandoned" coal mine and works as a gofer. Sung-cheol, the coal factory owner's son, is known around town for being a tyrant in nearby coffee shops and bars. He shows uncharacteristic interest in Gi-young. Young-sook, who sells more than coffee at the coffe house, is fascinated by Gi-young's qualities. She decides to pursue love by giving up prostitution. Their love remains even after the threat of a worker strike. When Sung-cheol hears about his mother's death, he becomes violent towards Young-sook.. Gi-young tries to stop the fight but is pulled into it and mistaken by the police as a perpetrator. After the torture he endured, the police let him go. Gi-young has no choice but to leave town because his identity has been exposed. Young-sook sets off with him to leave the coal mine village but on her last coffee run, she runs into Seong-cheol. She kills him when he tries to stop her from leaving and is dragged off by the police as Gi-young watches on.
